Learn Japanese Faster and Better with More Vocabulary

You can learn Japanese faster by knowing more vocabulary. A lot of people may have known this already but only a few are actually following this simple yet important method. Many of us might have been introduced to Japanese through words like konnichiwa (hello) or sayonara (good-bye). However, you need to know beyond that level when you are serious about learning Japanese.
Most Japanese learners feel excited on how to speak Japanese when they first started attending lessons or self-studying. But they have missed the important step that in order to speak good Japanese, you need a good set of vocabulary to enrich your speech. This applies to other languages as well. You can’t speak good Japanese if your speeches contains only simple words like konnichiwa or sayonara.
However, memorizing new vocabulary can be very boring and tedious. I remembered receiving a stack of vocabulary sheets when I was attending my Japanese lessons. I think most people forgot about those sheets and threw them aside. Unlike them, I used those sheets to enrich my knowledge in Japanese words. I memorized all (maybe not all, but most) of the vocabulary in those sheets. This required a lot of hard work, but it helped to strengthen my Japanese studies.
There are many more advantages of increasing your knowledge of Japanese vocabulary:
1. You tend to speak Japanese more fluently if you know more Japanese words. This may be just my opinion but I found out that most of my friends who study Japanese agreed with me.
2. You can write and communicate better in Japanese when you have a better knowledge of Japanese vocabulary. My Japanese pen pal praised that I wrote very well in my emails and thought she was writing to a Japanese friend instead of a foreigner.
3. If you have taken the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT), you would have known that there is a section which tests your knowledge on vocabulary. Many people did badly in this section because the questions include vocabulary beyond what they’ve learned in the class. I normally did quite well in this section as I like to explore more vocabulary beyond my Japanese lessons. Besides, knowing more vocabulary helped to increase the speed of reading which is also critical in the test.
To know more Japanese vocabulary, you may want to try one or more of the following methods:
1. Read Japanese novels. This may require you to be at the intermediate or advance level in your learning of the language, or else you may not even know what you’re reading. This method really helps me to acquire more words which I would not have known by attending classes alone.
2. Listen to your favorite Japanese songs. This may be helpful too as you can remember words better through songs that interest you. And since you will keep listening to your favorite songs, you can remember the words without much effort. In addition, you can relate to the words better in this way.
3. Watch Japanese dramas. If you want to learn more “casual” words instead of the “formal” words taught in the classroom, watching dramas can really help. Maybe while watching your favorite dramas, your mind is more relaxing and thus is able to remember more words.
